Visual arts is a subject that allows ākonga to express and develop their creativity, while developing their knowledge and skills. Ākonga create their own artworks while learning about the work of other artists and the cultural and social contexts that these artworks reflect. Ākonga can study visual arts to gain qualifications or to explore their interest in art.
Ākonga are given an introduction to drawing, painting, sculpture and design using a variety of techniques and media. An awareness of the process of developing artistic ideas from start to finish is introduced, and ākonga can plan an appropriate programme to meet their needs and interests in art. Year 10 ākonga can further develop skills and knowledge appropriate for moving forward to NCEA qualifications at Year 11.
