« Back to History
To understand the past is to understand the present. History gives ākonga an insight into the current world and New Zealand’s identity and place within it. It explores people and events and how they have influenced the present. Ākonga improve their communication and writing skills, enabling them to express clear, convincing and well-thought-out arguments. History is both a fascinating and intellectually stimulating subject.
History provides an opportunity for ākonga to understand how our historical narratives are shaped and how they influence our understanding of both ourselves and the world around us. Through whanaungatanga, vā, and fonua, ākonga are able to grow as confident, questioning, and empathetic individuals. Ākonga will have the opportunity to look at causes and effects, as well as the continuity and change of historical narratives.
